Chamonix golf course nestles between the Mont Blanc range and the Aiguilles Rouges on the valley floor. One would imagine that a mountain course would be on steep slopes but that is absolutely not the case.

In this magnificent setting the remarkable work of American architect Robert Trent Jones Sr takes on another dimension. The course is technical and subtle, with water hazards and numerous bunkers.

The tee off strongly conditions the second move here. You have to control the depth, because the torrent blocks the fairway, but keep the distance so as not to have too long a club on the second shot. Another story of good depth on the attack on the green: too long and the putts, or even the chips, will be downhill and sloping, too short and it's the water. If the flag is in the left 1/3 of the green, leave yourself a margin to the right otherwise you will end up in the bunker and have a downhill exit. The average score of this hole in the championship is greater than 5.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Negotiate your start so that you can pass the water hazard on the second shot without presuming to hit the green. The strategy of getting onto the green in 3 shots (see 4) avoids many disasters. It’s a complicated hole that must be approached with a lot of humility. It is best to attack the green with a high ball so that it stays on the green. Otherwise, you will find it behind and will have to play a difficult downhill approach.

The tee-off is not very difficult, the water on the drive is not in play, unless you start from the black markers. The left part is more open than the right despite the visual perception we have from the start. The green is shallow, and if attacks are not high enough, they very regularly end up in the bunkers behind.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

You need a fairly easy ball carry to cross the river, here having ball height on the drive is important. The attack on the green is delicate: defended in front and behind by bunkers, this shallow green has little slope. You just have to be able to hold the ball on it. A good second shot (or 3rd) to get in front leaves a fairly easy approach to make between the two bunkers (lift or roll).

A shot made with a short or medium iron. When the flag is in the first third, this hole is simple, here the green is wider. The position of the flag at the bottom makes the attack more delicate due to the narrowness of the green at this location.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

The lake still impresses but the distance to cover is not very long. It's more mental. Do not overclub to pass the water at the risk of finding yourself in the bunker or in the forest on the right. There is also the option of cutting the obstacle aiming to the right, it is shorter, and you will then make an approach for the green.

If you are a fan of fade, putting this hole into play is for you. By leaning on the left of the fairway your ball will easily come out of the “lane” vision at the start. This green is very steep, you have to stay under the flag to avoid very complicated putts.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

The tee-off is narrow, especially in the first few meters. Don't be afraid to lean on the left, the right part is more punishing. The green is very steep, you must always stay under the flag to avoid complex putts.

A par 5 that can be hit in 2 for the longest. A hard play on the right of the fairway opens the best angle for the following shot(s).

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

A fairly simple par 5, it is wide. During the 2nd or 3rd shot, remember to lean more to the right to attack the green in the best conditions.

The tee off of this par 5 is preferable on the left of the fairway, even if it means choosing to be in the rough on the bunker side. Staying on the left of the fairway on the second shot will avoid, by being too far to the right, closing your attack on the green because of the trees. The general slope of the green goes down at 10:00 and takes away all the balls that arrive too low.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Take the “time” to arrive on the green on this par 5 which is best played on the left on the first shot and on the following shots until you attack the green. The general slope of the green takes all balls that arrive too low towards the back of the green and to the left.

The big hitters will be able to pass the part of the trees on the right which close the dog-leg. For shorter drive distances, play the left part of the fairway more, on the slope, the balls go down on the flat. The green, elevated, keeps balls arriving high and coming from the left. It's best to stay slightly short of the flag here for easier uphill putts.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Aim for the left “135 meters” post. Even if this seems too off-center to you, don't worry, the balls return to the flat. And even if you stay a little on the slope, it's better than in the marsh on the right. Play the following shots while always relying on the slope to the left. The general slope of the green is steep, it is best to stay slightly short of the flag here for easier putts.

Here you have to negotiate the difference in altitude, generally 1 to 2 clubs less, also taking into account the fact that the balls fly more at 1000m. There can be flag positions from easy to difficult. When the flag is on the left part of the green, take some space to the right, and generally speaking, it is better if you play a little short of the flag.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Take 1 club (or 2 depending) less than for the same distance flat. The right part of the green is wider and easier to reach because of the water in front which is receding to the left. When the flag is on the left part of the green, it is more reasonable to play the center of the green which is more spacious.

The tee-off is tricky, because it is bordered by the out-of-bounds area on the left and the trees on the right, especially if you start from the back tees. The attack on the green can only be done with very high balls to be able to hold it, otherwise the ball will go behind into the bunker, in the best case. The green is not a problem, it is not very steep.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Hitting your first shot further to the right is safer, because of the off imitate which can happen quickly. Play your next shots by moving slightly to the left of the fairway in order to prepare for an attack on the green with the best possible angle. Avoid the bunker on the right which is quite deep. Once on the green, nothing special, the green is slightly steep where all the flag positions are.

It is not necessary to be as long as possible at tee off. Rather, it must be “placed” in order to pass the tree which is on the fairway and avoid the rough opposite. The second shot is between 100m and 140m for a shallow green, especially on the left. The mound behind stops all balls that are too long. The slopes of the green are barely visible but still very influential.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Tee off rather on the right of the fairway to clear the tree on the left, even on the second shot if you cannot pass the water in 2 shots. You have no risk in taking 1 or two more clubs to attack the green, the mound behind stops all the balls and brings them back to the green.

Basically a question of club calibration here, as the elevation is significant in relation to the distance of the shot. The two trickiest flag positions are on the left and hard right. In both cases, playing the height by leaving a margin on the center side is a profitable strategy.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Once you have found the club that corresponds to the difference in height (probably 2 clubs less), always play the center of the green. This is the deepest and widest part, so this is where you will have the best chance of keeping your ball on the green.

Par 5 reachable in 2 shots for the longest players. The visual appearance of the narrow tee doesn't reflect reality, there is enough space, especially if you are long enough to pass the right bunkers with carry. This green is the longest on the course, choose the club carefully if the flag is at the back, and in this case, attack it from the right.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Use your driver on the left part of the right bunkers, no risk. Then the hole is wide. It's better if you play your shots little by little towards the right of the fairway to ultimately have a more favorable angle of attack on the green. Here the green is very long, there are sometimes 3 to 4 clubs apart depending on whether the flag is in front or at the back.

The shortest par 3 on the course in pure distance. The only difficulty is the direction because the bunkers arrive quickly. When the flag is completely right behind the bunker, forget about it and play the depth just to the right of the center green.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

This very green is well defended, on the right and left. If you want to score on this hole, and avoid the bunkers for sure, play the first shot short of the green and get there with a small approach for an easy bogey, and sometimes even par.

Par 5 not easy from start to finish. First of all, it is better to play not too long to stay on the widest part of the fairway and open up the second shot. The 2nd shot is made in a corridor and the 3rd towards a well-defended green whose general slope is upwards in the direction of play. It is better to stay short of the flag. 5.5 average score on this hole all year is a very good statistic!

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

You should not be impatient on this hole. 5 shots on the fairway is not a poor performance. It is long and narrow. Play more shots but play straight rather than looking for length, unless you have mastered it. Wait to attack the green when you can, and do so with a short club so your ball can stay on it. A too long shot can send the ball behind the green and leave you with a very tricky approach.

It all depends on your strengths and your tendencies for the first shot. You are powerful, you can go for the green or the foot of the green. Otherwise, leave yourself a distance that you like with a short club so that you can control depth and direction. The green is slightly domed and narrow, a lot of balls stick out.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Make your 1st shot towards the left of the fairway, this is the widest part. Then play to leave yourself a short club so that your attack on the green is high. The ball must be able to hold on this narrow and rounded green, especially because the green is elevated. Another profitable tactic: play at the foot of the green and leave yourself a small approach with a SW, or even a rolling shot into the mound.

Long par 4 where draw players will be comfortable. In all cases, it is better to play the right part of the fairway to avoid the trees on the left closing the attack on the green. 3 platforms await you, and they ensure delicate putts when the ball is not on the correct platform. Be careful, if the flag is on the back, the balls can quickly come out behind if the trajectory is not high enough.

Level « Bogey à Double bogey player »

Always keep your right a little on this hole, especially towards the end before playing the shot for the green. This will give you an easier playing angle with the entire green lengthwise. The green has 3 plateaus which ensure delicate putts when the ball is not on the correct plateau. If the flag is on the back, bounce the ball on the central part of the green otherwise your ball will come down behind it.

Par 5 reachable in 2. A fade drive is ideal. It is important to open the tee angle to the left, but not too much otherwise you will not be able to catch the green in 2 because of the trees on the left in front of the green. This hole is not complicated when played in regulation, but it is always tempting to go for it in 2. No difficulty on the green.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

Play your first shot on the left part of the fairway, don’t hesitate. Then you will head back to the right, because this hole is a bit like an “S”. It's not a difficult hole if you play it "diagonally", left first, then right then and finally back to the left. The green does not include any major difficulty.

The heart of the green is a good objective, with one or two clubs apart depending on the position of the flag in depth. It is well defended and it is a long club to play from the start. So putting the ball on the green is a good shot, and the putt will never be very difficult.

Level « Bogey to Double bogey player »

If you want to hit the green in 1, you need to have sufficient ball reach, you won't be able to get there by rolling. So to score, either you deliberately play the bunker, because you come out of it regularly, or you play short a little to the right and then you will play your approach high to go on the green.
